Slowly, slowly, back to squash?

By 18th July 2020July 22nd, 2020No Comments
It’s been a tough few months and we know that many of our members are suffering from squash withdrawal syndrome.
We have now received guidance from the government and from England Squash which will allow us to start reopening the courts under strict conditions. However it’s going to be a while before we get back to ‘normal’.
Click here for Full England Squash guidelines

Who can play?
Court usage will be restricted to:
1. Members booking solo coaching sessions with Pauline or Alistair
2. Members wishing to do solo practice
3. Members who live in the same household*

* [The concept of support bubble, introduced in early June, is for people who live alone – or single parents who live with children under 18 – to be allowed to go and visit one other household.  England Squash confirmed that this remains the working definition.  Let us know if you qualify and name one other person in your bubble.  Assuming that person is a club member, you will then be eligible to play that person]

As the restrictions are eased, we hope to allow further categories of play as we gradually return to normal.

What will be different?
You will notice various COVID-related changes at the club.
The cleaning regime has been stepped up and cleaning materials will be provided outside each court.
Changing rooms will be closed
Alternate courts will be unavailable for booking in order to allow time for courts to ‘air’ after each booking.
Courts will be unavailable for play after around 21.15 to enable a daily ‘deep clean’ to take place each evening.
The fans will be on throughout playing time in order to keep the courts well ventilated.
We have to keep a register of arrivals and departures from the club, and this will be done via a web-cam in the entrance lobby.

What must members do ?
If you have a session booked, please come changed and ready to play. There will be no showers available.
Bring your own water bottle (cups and glasses will not be available) Please do not arrive more than 5 minutes before your booked court time.
Please take all your equipment on court with you
Please do not touch the walls – use your own towel to dry your hands, and please clean up any droplets of sweat from the floor before you leave the court.
When you finish your session, please disinfect the door handles and all other surfaces you may have touched.
Please leave the club promptly once you have played, taking all your possessions with you.
If you become sick  with possible COVID sympoms after playing, please report this to the secretary, so that appropriate contact tracing can take place.

Reactivating your membership
You will remember that we paused all memberships for the duration of the lockdown. If you are not ready to return, then you do not need to do anything. Your membership will remain paused until you are ready or until ‘normal conditions’ return. If you are keen to get back on court (in one of the three categories outlined above) then please email the club secretary. We will ask you to confirm that you have read the club’s guidelines and that you will adhere to them.

When?
We are planning to open the courts by the beginning of August. Expect an email towards the end of week ending July 26th confirming the actual date. At this point, if we have received your agreement to abide by the conditions, we will unlock your membership, restoring your key fob access and your court booking rights.

Help – keeping the clubhouse safe
The club committee is carrying out a risk assessment based on the current guidance, and we will implement actions to make the venue safe and to minimise the risk of infection.
We are seeking advice from an appropriately qualified health and safety support or advice to help us. Are any of the members able to offer this? Please contact if this is your area of expertise and you can help.

What next?
These arrangements can be changed at short notice if/when England Squash or government guidelines tell us that new regulations are appropriate.
We are taking this very seriously. Sorry, but any breach of the prevailing restrictions may lead to suspension of membership and or closure of the club.
Members will be notified of any changes by email and via notices posted at the club.  Please enjoy your (slow) return to squash, stay safe and well and do not put other members of the club or the wider community at risk.

Best wishes
The Committee
